Everyone should check their blood pressure regularly. That way, you’ll know your heart’s health condition. Most people use automated tools to measure blood pressure in the home. This tool works by pumping the cuff around the upper arm to stop the blood flow in the arteries temporarily. As the air slowly detached from the cuff, it will record the pressure in which the blood begins to flow again.

Blood pressure is recorded as two sizes:

  • The first digit is the systolic pressure. Systolic pressure shows peak blood pressure that appears when the heart contracts
  • The second digit is the diastolic pressure. Diastolic pressure shows the lowest blood pressure that appears when the heart is relaxed between beats.

These two pressures are demonstrated in mercury millimeters (mm Hg) because the original blood pressure gauge uses mercury columns. Blood pressure measurements are recorded as systolic / diastolic (say “systolic above diastolic”).

For example, if the systolic pressure of 120 mm Hg and diastolic pressure of 80 mm Hg, blood pressure was recorded as 120/80 (say 120 above 80).

Some conditions that cause a person to routinely check blood pressure

If you are in good health and do not have any disease, then it should be your blood pressure in the normal range. Normal blood pressure ranges from 90/60 mmHg to 120/60 mmHg. In other words, normal systolic pressure is 90-120 mmHg. While healthy diastolic numbers range between 60-80 mmHg.

When you do a blood pressure check, the two numbers are less or more likely, you may experience certain cardiac function disorders. Some of the conditions that make you should often do blood pressure screening include:

  • Aged 35 years or older
  • Has a history of hypertensive disease
  • Has high blood risk factors due to heredity
  • Have a history of heart or kidney problems
  • Being pregnant

Anyone can experience high blood pressure, even children. If you or someone in your family hasn’t checked blood pressure in the last 5 years, immediately check your blood pressure to the doctor.

In the meantime, a regular home inspection is known as a home blood pressure measurement. These checks are usually done on their own using a tension gauge that can be purchased on the market.

Home examination serves as confirmation of diagnosis done in the clinic. The reason is, there are some people who suffer from white coat hypertension when measuring blood pressure with a medical officer.

  • Measure your blood pressure within 3-4 times in one week. Even better if done every day.

  • Do 2-3 times the measurement of blood pressure every time you perform a check. After that, you take the average number.
  • Blood pressure measurement should be done in a quiet room. The position should sit comfortably. The hand should be supported and the back rests. Make it as relaxed as possible.
  • If you’ve previously run out of activities, such as walking or climbing stairs, you should rest first. Give a delay of 3-5 minutes before measuring blood pressure.
