How Forteo works

Teriparatide (Forteo) is a prescription drug used to treat osteoporosis, a bone disease that all the time causes the bones to become brittle and tends to rupture.

Teriparatide is similar to the human parathyroid hormone (PTH) and is made using recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology. PTH is naturally produced by the body and is the primary regulator of calcium and phosphate metabolism in the bones and kidneys. Calcium and phosphate are the main minerals required for bone health.

PTH also increases the absorption of calcium in the intestines. Teriparatide binds the same receptors as natural PTH and mimics the beneficial effects of PTH on bone health. Beneficial effects of teriparatide in the treatment of osteoporosis include the reduction of bone turnover, the formation of new bones, and increased bone mineral density and bone strength.

Teriparatide was first approved by the FDA in the year 2002.
